At Carthage Area Hospital, we recognize that foot issues can affect patients of any age. That’s why we merged with Dr. Debra J. Williams’ podiatry practice in 2018. This new relationship allows our podiatrists to provide high-quality personalized foot care to residents living in Jefferson, northern Lewis, and southern St. Lawrence counties in New York.
What Do Podiatrists Treat?
Podiatrists are physicians who receive special training to treat ankle and foot issues. They have Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degrees and can provide surgical and non-surgical solutions to foot-related problems. Some of the most common conditions podiatrists treat include:
Calluses and Corns
A callus is an area of thick, hardened skin that develops under the balls and heels of the feet. Calluses are not always painful unless they form on the top of the toes as corns. Meanwhile, corns are stiff lumps encircled by inflamed skin that cause significant pain.
Hammertoes
Hammertoes occur when your tendons use a disproportionate amount of tension to pull your toes, causing buckling or contracting. This condition can be irritating when wearing shoes and cause the foot to develop corns.
Heel Pain
People who exercise too much or wear shoes that don’t fit may develop heel pain. Leg or foot cramps can form in conjunction with this pain, and it may spread to the calf muscles or the arches of the feet.
High and Low Arches
Most people’s feet deviate from ideal foot structure, leading to high arch and low arch feet. Depending on the severity of this deviation, you may develop a foot deformity or dysfunction.
Ingrown Toenails
This common condition forms when the edges of the nail bend and protrude into the skin. Ingrown toenails lead to inflammation, swelling, and even infections.
Warts
Warts most often form on the bottom of the feet. These plantar warts evolve from a viral infection in the skin and may extend to other areas of the foot.
