Dr. Gutman Joins Carthage Area Hospital’s Medical Staff

Carthage Area Hospital is pleased to welcome Dr. David M. Gutman, M.D., F.A.C.G. to its medical staff as a gastroenterologist, effective February 18, 2019. Dr. Gutman will provide necessary coverage for patients in need of gastrointestinal care in the North Country. He will be seeing patients out of the Carthage Surgical Clinic, 1001 West St. Carthage, NY every Monday and Tuesday.

Dr. Gutman currently works at the North Shore University, Manhasset, NY, as the Director of the Gastroesophageal Reflux Program. He also is the Director of the Northwell Reflux Center at Plainview Hospital, Plainview, NY and is an attending physician at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Queens, NY.

Dr. Gutman specializes in Laryngopharyngeal and Airway Reflux, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Eosinophilic Esophagitis, Barrett’s Esophagus, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Constipation and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, Non-Cardiac Chest Pain, Achalasia, Gastroparesis, Functional GI Disorders, World Trade Center Syndrome, Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders, Inflammatory Bowel Disease including all biologics, and Bariatric evaluations and complications. He even writes a personal blog appropriately titled, refluxny.com.

Procedure skills include esophagogastroduodenoscopy with biopsy, transnasal esophagoscopy  and endoscopy, colonoscopy and polypectomy, esophageal and gastric dilation and bougienage (balloon, Savery), endoluminal including transoral incisionless fundoplication (Esophyx), esophageal and pharyngeal pH testing including wireless esophageal acid testing (Bravo), laryngopharyngeal and gastroesophageal impedance-pH testing, pharyngeal pH (Restech), high resolution esophageal impedance-manometry, anorectal manometry, wireless motility capsule (Smart Pill), Functional Luminal Impedance Planimetry (EndoFLIP), endoscopic clip closure of mucosal defects, bleeding hemostasis with clip ligation, bipolar coagulation and injection, endoscopic banding and sclerotherapy of esophageal varices, infrared ablation of hemorrhoids, office biologic fusion therapy, video capsule endoscopy, unsedated Endoscopy and Colonoscopy.

A native of Poland, Dr. Gutman graduated Magna Cum Laude from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, in 1983. He continued his Internal Medicine residency at Baylor from 1983-1986. Dr. Gutman completed his Gastroenterology Fellowship at Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA in 1988. Dr. Gutman is Board-Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology. He’s also contributed to a number of publications and participated in various lectures and studies.

Dr. Gutman resides in Syosset, NY with his singer wife, Ashley Myles; currently on ITunes; and their dog, Biscuit, a beloved dachshund that’s famous on Instagram.
