Monies Earmarked Towards Hospital’s Diabetes Program
Thanks to generosity of the Carthage Lions Club, the Carthage Area Hospital Foundation received $700 in the month of November to be earmarked for the Diabetes Education Program at Carthage Area Hospital. The Carthage Lions Club has supported the program for the last ten years. Proceeds were raised from raffle baskets that were placed at Carthage Savings & Loan over a period of two weeks.
1.7 Million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes each year according to the American Diabetes Association. For patients who are looking for ways to manage their diabetes, Carthage Area Hospital’s Nutrition Department created the Diabetes Education Program. Patients are instructed by Registered Dietician and Certified Diabetes Educator, Carly Draper, RD, CDN, CDE to cover an array of topics including healthy eating & nutrition, physical activity & impact, benefits of blood glucose monitoring, medications, and diabetes & family.
“The Carthage Lions Club began raising funds for diabetes prevention in 2009 with a diabetes walk organized by Lion Diana Clement and continued on when Amelia Renaud was Miss Italia in 2010. Diabetes education was Amelia’s platform. Since the Lions’ platform is geared towards eyesight and diabetes affects eyesight, it seemed like a natural fit for us to support this initiative.”
“We’re incredibly grateful for this generous donation from the Carthage Lions Club. These funds will greatly impact our diabetes education program and allow us to purchase educational materials and other items to better assist those living with diabetes,” said Taylour Scanlin, Carthage Hospital Foundation Executive Director.
