Carthage Hospital Partners With Elizabeth Wende Breast Care - Carthage Area Hospital

Renowned Breast Care Center to Open Office in Bridge Street Professional Building

Carthage Area Hospital is excited to announce a clinical partnership that will bring world-class breast imaging and breast cancer diagnosis to the North Country. Hospital officials recently signed an agreement with Elizabeth Wende Breast Care, Rochester, which will open an imaging facility in the Carthage Professional Building.

Elizabeth Wende Breast Care will occupy clinical space at 3 Bridge St., Suite 1, which is presently being vacated by the hospital’s Tri-County Orthopedics clinic as it relocates to Suite 5 on the south side of the same building. Renovation for Elizabeth Wende Breast Care will soon begin with anticipated completion by the end of June.

The breast care center is now scheduling patients for appointments in Carthage beginning mid-July. Call 585-442-3922, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., to schedule an appointment or online at ewbc.com.

“The decision by Elizabeth Wende Breast Care to open an office in Carthage means local patients can soon receive first-in-class imaging and care without the stress of travel,” Carthage Area Hospital CEO Rich Duvall said. “This adds another high-quality local option for breast care for thousands of North Country residents.”

North Country cancer care providers include Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg, a clinical affiliate of Carthage Area Hospital, and Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown. The addition of EWBC in Carthage also means that Carthage Hospital technologists will no longer provide mammography and bone density scans at the West Street campus.

Duvall stressed that the partnership with Elizabeth Wende Breast Care would help North Country cancer treatment providers. Patients diagnosed in Carthage will be more likely to seek continued care and treatment at local facilities like Claxton-Hepburn and Samaritan that offer chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

“The outmigration of patients for specialized services is one of the great challenges providers have had in the North Country,” Duvall said. “This new relationship is an opportunity to strengthen regional partners and improve care across the area.”

Stamatia V. Destounis, M.D., FACR, Elizabeth Wende Breast Care breast imaging specialist, said the Carthage office brings care closer for its many established patients who have previously endured nearly 400 miles of travel to and from the Rochester area.

“For years, women have traveled long distances to our facility in Rochester and now Elizabeth Wende Breast Care is excited to offer women in North Country the latest in breast imaging technology.”

The Carthage location is the sixth for Elizabeth Wende Breast Care, whose main office is in Brighton. EWBC operates clinical locations in Batavia, Geneseo, Greece, and Victor.

Elizabeth Wende Breast Care is known for its patient promise of “results while you wait,” a key service value it will strive to deliver at its Carthage location with same-day 3D mammogram readings.

First in region with latest breast imaging technology

3D mammography with C-View is the standard of care at EWBC for all patients. The addition of C-View software allows for 3D imaging with a 40 percent reduction in radiation versus 3D imaging without C-View. 3D offers improved breast cancer detection and is beneficial for all patients, especially those with dense breast tissue or a higher risk of breast cancer. Elizabeth Wende Breast Care and its seven physicians have more than 100 years of combined experience as breast imaging specialists.
