About Fishing for Freedom Thousand Islands
Military and civilian anglers alike can mark their calendars once again for a one-of-a-kind professional-grade, amateur bass tournament in the magnificent Thousand Islands. The 3rd Annual Fishing for Freedom Thousand Islands Bass Tournament, presented by Waite Toyota and Carthage Area Hospital is set for Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Bonnie Castle Resort in Alexandria Bay, NY. With spectacular views of the Thousand Islands, the St. Lawrence River is home to plentiful smallmouth and largemouth bass. Anglers can compete for the largest bass of the day and even every hour.
Fishing for Freedom Thousand Islands is run by the famous World Fishing Network Organizations, Bass Champs and Army Bass Anglers. Fishing for Freedom Thousand Islands honors Active Duty Military and celebrates freedom and outdoor recreation in Northern New York. Active Duty & Retired Military receive a 50% discount on angler registration. Any civilian angler who volunteers to take a soldier on their boat will also receive the 50% discount.
Fishing for Freedom Thousand Islands kicks off on Friday, September 16, 2016 with live music, opening ceremonies with a decorated military speaker, a meet and greet with a UFC champion, and a live public auction in Downtown Alexandria Bay starting at 4pm.
The tournament begins bright and early on September 17, 2016 at day break. Throughout the day there will be hourly weigh-ins and cash prizes for the top bass of the hour. The day will conclude with top prizes and giveaways.
Last year’s tournament hosted over 80 anglers. 25 soldiers who didn’t have a boat had an opportunity to be paired up with anglers with a boat. There was a 50/50 split between civilian and military personnel who fished the tournament. U.S. Army Vet, Dan Murphy won the grand prize of a Polaris Sportsman ETX ATV from Waite Motorsports for the largest catch of the day – lunker 5.75 pound smallmouth bass.
Proceeds will benefit the Carthage Area Hospital Foundation and the USO Fort Drum, two organizations who strongly support the military in various ways.
