School-Based Health Care in Jefferson and Lewis Counties
Carthage Area Hospital proudly provides students in Jefferson and Lewis counties in New York with a unique healthcare program. Those enrolled in our school-based health clinics will receive these exceptional services in a comfortable school setting. Our goal is to provide as many students as we can with the care they need to remain healthy, allowing them to focus on school and their education.
Services Provided to Students
Services provided to students through the Carthage Area Hospital school-based health clinic program include:
- Nutrition: As students age, childhood obesity can lead to numerous health concerns. We will work with students to help them better understand good nutrition and how they can implement it into their diet.
- Allergy injections: A series of injections will be administered to students over a period of time, to stop or reduce their allergic reactions and thus improve their quality of life.
- Sports physicals: Our healthcare physicians will administer sports physicals to students to ensure it is safe for them to participate.
- Chronic health condition management: Monitoring and managing chronic health conditions in students is vital because it can prevent the disorders from progressing.
- Lab testing: With the help of state-of-the-art equipment, we provide students with reliable lab testing to help diagnose certain medical conditions and provide better treatment options.
- Mental health services: A student’s mental health includes their psychological, social, and emotional well-being. Providing them with mental health services can help improve the way they feel, think, and act.
- Age-appropriate exams: Students will receive the proper physical exams to ensure they are healthy and do not show any signs of underlying health issues.
- PPD testing: Known as a purified protein derivative skin test, this test will determine if a student has tuberculosis.
- Immunizations: Carthage Area Hospital provides students with the proper vaccines required to safely attend school.
- Treatment of acute illness and injury: Acute illnesses such as cold, flu, and viruses can spread quickly throughout a school. We help treat students with these conditions, allowing schools to remain a safe place to learn.

Dental Services in the LaFargeville School-Based Health Clinic
Students enrolled in the LaFargeville School-Based Health Clinic can participate in a preventative dental program, as well. The dental program includes services such as:
- Annual cleanings
- Screenings
- Sealants
- Fluoride treatment
Services are performed by a registered dental hygienist. All insurances are accepted, and no co-pay is necessary. There will be no out-of-pocket expenses for services performed in the clinic, however, any services performed outside our program will require payment.
